Home of the legendary Alnwick Rum and Alnwick Ale, Alnwick is a bustling market town, with Barter Books, one of the largest second hand book shops in the country, located in the fine old disused Railway Station which used to have passenger lines to nearby Alnmouth and to Cornhill.

The Duke of Northumberland and his family live in Alnwick Castle, also home of the first Harry Potter film, and, more recently, one of the sets for Elizabeth Virgin Queen. Alnwick Castle is open from Easter to the end of September, and is surrounded by 1250 hectares of landscaped meadows, woods and parklands, designed in the 18th century by Capability Brown, a Northumbrian by birth. In the Castle grounds, the Duchess has built a fine new Garden.

Near the Castle is the Bailiffgate Museum, presenting local history of Alnwick and District.

Alnwick also boasts a fine Theatre, Alnwick Playhouse, home to the Northumberland Theatre Company, and which features performances by professional touring acts as well as local Amateur societies such as the Alnwick Theatre Club, Alnwick Pipers, Alnwick Stage Musical Society, Alnwick Choral Society, and others such as the Alnwick Playhouse Concert Band and the Alnwick Playhouse Youth Theatre .

The Alnwick Musical Festival, in August, lasts a week, when musicians from all over the world perform in the Market Square. The town becomes very colourful, with the entertainers walking around in their national costumes.

This is followed in September by the annual Food Festival, and then from late November by the Christmas Lights.

The local paper is the Northumberland Gazette, which carries an "Eating out" guide to some of the local restaurants, and has a number of photographic "virtual tours" of the area.

Currently home of the Alnwick District Council, Alnwick has had a running battle with over which is the County Town, a battle that Alnwick claims to have won.
